Termites do a wonderful job in converting organic matter. During the summer they are active and within days dried leaves, husks, whole coconuts etc are eaten up. Without them decomposing organic matter will take long time. Some times they are seen eating some portion of the barks on the coconut trees, but so far hasn't damaged any trees. ReplyDeleteI am into natural farming and here we don't treat any insects as pests and hence control of termites is not needed.
The side effects of liquids you use will be unknown to you. You have to be more careful since you are in continuously in touch with them. Nobody would have done study of these side effects and it is not practical to conduct such study since it may take years for the side effects to surface.
Earlier in US, while searching for the cause of some cancer, they found that it was the result of a particular chemical used while treating for the termites during basement construction. Since there the houses are built using wood, they treat it before starting the construction and the residue of this chemical was found in the human body and it even penetrates concrete, this chemical is called as Chlordane, see the link

In my experience Termites are doing a wonderful job converting organic matter into fertilizer. In summer they just eat the organic matter and they don't take it away. They are part of the eco system and whatever they eat, finally goes to the soil, once they die.

In my experience termites have been helping me. In properly balanced eco system they may not cause a problem, if there is mono crop, there may be damage and fighting against nature may be futile.
